BAE Systems advances production of the new Archer artillery systems based on the RMMV HX2 chassis, with deliveries to Sweden scheduled for 2026.
The military training ground in Boden, northern Sweden, hosted the first live firing of the new Archer 155 mm/52 self-propelled howitzer mounted on the RMMV HX2 (8×8) chassis, produced by the German company Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicle (RMMV).

The event marks a significant milestone in Sweden’s artillery modernization program.
In September 2023, BAE Systems signed a contract worth 5 billion Swedish kronor (approximately €419 million) with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets materielverk – FMV) for the supply of 48 Archer units in the new 8×8 configuration. According to the agreement, deliveries to the Swedish Army are set to begin in 2026.
The new version replaces the original articulated Volvo A30 chassis, adopting the RMMV HX2 platform for improved mobility, logistical standardization, and NATO interoperability. The system retains the ability to fire 155 mm ammunition at ranges exceeding 40 km, operated by only three crew members and capable of opening fire in less than 30 seconds.

In addition to the main Swedish contract, another 18 Archer howitzers are being produced as military aid to Ukraine, and an additional 18 units were ordered by Latvia in the summer of 2025 — reinforcing the system’s status as one of Europe’s most advanced and export-ready artillery platforms.
